Updated at 10:34 a.m. Houston-based attorney Rita Lucido defeated her opponent Fran Watson on May 22, receiving the Democratic nomination to run against incumbent Joan Huffman for the state Senate District 17 seat in November. With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Lucido received 57.8 percent of the vote or 10,476 votes, whereas Watson garnered 42.2 percent of the vote or 7,659 votes. "I am humbled and honored to have earned the confidence of thousands of my fellow residents of Texas Senate District 17," Lucido said in an emailed statement. "To all those who voted for me, I hope to make you proud. To all those who did not vote I pledge to earn your vote. It was my honor and privilege to campaign with Fran Watson for this nomination. She is a great person and outstanding candidate. I truly believe that together, we will win in November." Lucido will face Huffman in the general election Nov. 6. All results are unofficial until canvassed.
