Downtown Plano property owners and the city will continue to chip in for efforts to promote the historic district after the City Council ensured the program would not expire.
Plano City Council on Nov. 13 approved a five-year renewal of the downtown Plano public improvement district. The district designation, originally approved in 2014, would have expired at the end of December.
As part of the designation, property owners in downtown Plano pay a fee to support district promotion efforts, including “beautification projects, special events and marketing,” according to a city memo. The city itself contributes at least $50,000 per year to the district.
The money raised through the public improvement district supports some of downtown Plano’s most prominent events, including Steinfest, ArtFest and Movies in the Park, which attract thousands of people each year.
“The added benefit of the events is the downtown foot traffic resulting in business recognition and potential customers that for many business owners, acting alone, would be out of reach,” the memo reads.
A petition process that began in June showed 4 in 5 property owners in the downtown district supported renewing the designation. The owners who supported the measure accounted for 71 percent of the land area and 58 percent of the property value, according to city documents.
