Health officials have confirmed another human case of West Nile virus in Plano, and the city plans to spray the patient's west Plano neighborhood for mosquitoes as a precaution.
The city plans to spray beginning at 9 p.m. Thursday in the area northwest of the Parker Road and Communications Parkway intersection, according to a Monday news release. Pets and children should remain indoors during the spray hours.
The patient is at least the fourth known Plano resident to contract the West Nile virus in 2017.
Although humans rarely contract West Nile virus—states reported fewer than 2,000 human cases to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2016—it can be life-threatening for the 1 percent of human cases that result in a serious neurological condition. People age 60 and older bear the most risk, according to the agency.
See the map below for the boundaries of the spray area.
