The city of Austin's transportation department has completed work to convert East Fifth Street from a one-way to a two-way thoroughfare. The roadway now consists of two eastbound lanes and one westbound lane between Brazos Street and the I-35 southbound frontage road. According to the Austin Transportation Department, new signals have been installed, signage has been adjusted and lanes have been restriped. ATD says the street conversion should reduce the congestion that occurs when Sixth Street is closed during entertainment hours by improving overall east- and westbound downtown travel times. The department expects to maintain existing eastbound commuter volumes during the evening peak period in addition to signal priority patterns and vehicle capacity.
