City of Plano is seeking submissions from artists across the nation for pieces of public art to be displayed in the Historic Arts District of Downtown Plano. There will be space for seven structures on 15th Street between US 75 and G Avenue. Interested artists from the community and elsewhere have until May 9 to submit their applications. A selection committee and panel made up of two city staff members, two members of the Historic Downtown Plano Association, a member of Haggard Park Neighborhood Association and two members of local arts associations will consider the first round of applicants. Selected artists will be contacted and would be requested to submit their proposals for public art pieces in downtown Plano. After a careful screening and interview process, city officials will vote on one artist who would get the contract, said Michelle Hawkins, administrator of arts, culture and heritage for the city of Plano. “I would just like for people to see that downtown Plano does have art in it, and as people are driving into downtown Plano it [the art] would set off that they are going into a different Plano,” Hawkins said. Hawkins said the committee wants to see a variety of ideas ranging from sculptures to paintings to murals. For the first stage, artists can send a resume, application and work samples to www.callforentry.org or online at http://www.plano.gov/2803/Portal-Project before May 9.
