Those with diabetes or who want to learn more about diabetes can attend an educational expo with a variety of sessions March 28.
Taking Control of Your Diabetes Expo will begin at 9 a.m. at Austin Convention Center with registration opening at 7:30 a.m. or available online. The event will feature speakers from across the nation. Benny Madrigal, an athlete on the running and triathlon team for Team Novo Nordisk, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 22 years old and will be at the conference at his team's booth. Team Novo Nordisk is a global sports team made up of cyclists, triathletes, and runners with diabetes who aim to inspire, educate and empower those affected by diabetes. Madrigal said he encourages those living with diabetes to be as positive as possible, follow a healthy lifestyle and set realistic goals. If every person walks away only learning one new thing or one new way to improve their life, Madrigal said he would feel accomplished. Team Novo Nordisk’s setup at the expo will include a cycle zone where visitors can try out the exercise, Madrigal said. Approximately 49,351 adults in Travis County are living with diabetes, according to the Center for Disease Control. According to a 2013 report by the Texas Department of State Health Services, diabetes is among the top 10 leading causes of death in Texas. However, Health and Human Services announced March 25 that Austin/Travis County ranked ninth out of 237 Texas counties for health standards based on smoking, physical activity and access to healthy foods.
