The Plano Tom Thumb location at 4836 W. Park Blvd. has been acquired by Minyard Food Stores as part of an agreement that includes 11 other Tom Thumb and Albertson's locations in the DFW area.
According to a news release, the agreement is part of a requirement by the Federal Trade Commission that will allow Albertson's to acquire Safeway, which operates under the Tom Thumb and Randall's store banners.
The transaction is still subject to approval by the FTC, according to the release.
Minyard Food Stores is a hometown, locally owned supermarket chain that currently operates 12 DFW locations. The stores are owned by Ray and Leticia Schalek.
Minyard plans to open the stores in a new, fresh-focused format, operating as Minyard Sun Fresh Market.
"The Metroplex is our home and we are extremely excited about the new communities that we are going to be serving and the new employees that we will be welcoming to the Minyard Family," Ray Schalek, president and owner of the Minyard Stores, said in the news release. "We want our customers' shopping experience to be a pleasant one where you will be served by the same familiar faces and enjoy the convenience of these neighborhood locations, and recognize the enhanced offerings that our new Minyard Sun Fresh Markets have to offer and experience our Minyard's 'Texas Proud' hometown service."
