Two weeks after a packed council chamber watched City Council members approve 156.3 acres to be rezoned for urban mixed-use development in Central Plano, elected city officials are at it again.

City Council members unanimously approved a request to rezone 86.2 acres on the west side of Coit Road and north of Mapleshade Lane from light industrial to urban mixed use in its regular meeting Nov. 10.

The new zoning allows for a proposed development by Billingsley Company called Beacon Square that will serve as a retail gateway off Coit Road. Lucy Billingsley, a partner on Billingsley's executive management team, presented the proposed development that includes 800,000 square feet of office space and more than 100,000 square feet of retail that will be mixed in with open space, multifamily units, 294 townhomes. An initial plan for a similar development by Billingsley was brought before council once already, but Mayor Harry LaRosiliere said the company worked with staff for the past two years to create a better plan for the area.

"Just from a pure land use standpoint, this fits into [the city's] long-term vision," LaRosiliere said.
