IMPACT ROUNDUP: Organization uses music to educate, unite families

Heartsong Music will celebrate its 10-year-anniversary Nov. 15 with a musical celebration and silent auction.

The organization was founded by Carey Youngblood, a certified Montessori teacher who has taught children and youth choirs for more than 40 years. The mission of the classes is to bring families together and teach children creativity through music.

"Playing and doing music in our rich environment brought out and nurtures children's inborn capabilities to respond to and make music, even as babies," Youngblood said in a statement. "The program helps develop bonds between parents, siblings, caregivers and other members of the extended family."

Proceeds from the silent auction will go toward funding weekly Music Together classes for 300 underserved East Austin preschool children. The class partners children and their parents or primary caregiver in a session where they can explore songs, instruments and chants that enhance the human instinct of creating music, according to a Heartsong Music news release.

The event will take place from 4–7 p.m. Nov. 15 at 13530 N. US 183.
