Plano's Sustainability and Environmental Education department hosts Recycling & Waste Diversion, the first of the department's Sustainability Series, from 7–8:30 p.m. on Sept. 25 at Harrington Library, 1501 18th St.
The free event will not only provide tips on how to recycle and reduce waste, but the Sustainability and Environmental Education department will also kick off Recycle Right All-Stars program, a new recycling incentive program, said Heather Merchant, manager of the department.
The program works by awarding residents who recycle correctly. The city checks trash and recycle carts randomly to ensure items are being recycled and disposed of efficiently. If a resident's cart is right, Merchant said the city adds a sticker to the cart and enters the resident into a drawing for a year of free collection services.
"It's a program that we're doing to raise awareness among our residents about proper recycling," Merchant said.
The program has been piloted in particular neighborhoods, but Merchant said it will be fully implemented in early October.
A series of six classes will educate Plano residents about the basics to conserving natural and financial resources through interactive talks on subjects such as energy, urban agriculture and air quality. The department will hold classes about once a month until May.
