Residents can dispose of their expired prescription medication at the Travis County Western Community Center in Oak Hill as part of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, a collection effort of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency.
"This is a no-questions-asked event," said Shaun Auckland, conservation coordinator with the Travis County department of transportation and natural resources. She explained the center will feature a drive-thru, and drivers can drop off their drugs in a box as part of the free, anonymous service. Participants do not have to live in Travis County, she said.
Drugs that remain tucked away in cabinets are susceptible to misuse and abuse, she said, adding that throwing pills in the trash or flushing them down the toilet can negatively affect water quality.
The center at 8656 W. Hwy. 71 will collect expired drugs Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
