Hundreds of bicyclists and thousands of spectators are expected to fill the streets for the inaugural Subaru of Georgetown Grand, the state criterium championship weekend for the Texas Bicycle Racing Association.
Bicyclists will traverse the 1-mile downtown course, which includes the Square and eight turns in a double-loop circuit. Staged by Holland Racing, the Subaru of Georgetown Grand offers a total of $30,000 in cash prizes for winners of races.
Not just for professional riders, there is also a noncompetitive ride with routes of varying distances for recreational riders. The weekend also includes live music, food, an expo area and a children's lab.
On Saturday, racing on the downtown circuit course starts at 9 a.m. and continues through 9 p.m. with races for youth, juniors, masters and other categories.
Racing continues on Sunday, beginning at 8 a.m. on the criterium course and continuing throughout the day in age- and skill-based categories.
Free parking will be available throughout downtown at lots, including:
10th and Main streets
Fifth Street and Austin Avenue
MLK Jr. and Seventh streets
Albertsons parking lot, 610 N. Austin Ave.
Maple Street at Southwestern Boulevard
Visitor and faculty lot near the Cullen Building on the Southwestern University campus on Maple Street
On-street parking will also be available in the downtown area near the course. There will be "No Parking" signs on posted some streets.
The downtown course will be closed to traffic May 18 at 4 p.m. through May 20 at 8 p.m. Austin Avenue will be closed between Third and 11th streets during that time, and traffic from Austin Avenue will be detoured to Church Street.
