The Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center celebrates its 10th anniversary this weekend. It is hosting an art show on Friday, Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. and a series of events—including an open house and performances—on Saturday, Sept. 16 starting at 4 p.m. The MACC opened in 2007 after decades of development, starting in the early 1970s when a group of Hispanic activists asked the city of Austin to support the development of a cultural arts center. It wasn't until 1999 that voters approved a bond package that covered the costs of the center. Construction workers finally broke ground in 2006. The MAAC, which is located at 600 River St., preserves and celebrates Mexican American arts and heritage as well as Native American, Chicano and other Latino cultures. www.austintexas.gov/esbmacc
