Threadgill's World Headquarters, at 301 W. Riverside Drive, Austin, plans to close at the end of March 2018 because of sharply rising rent downtown, according to a company spokesperson.

"We are desperately trying to find a way to keep from closing," the spokesperson said in an email.

Threadgill's opened its first location in 1933 on North Lamar Boulevard. Janis Joplin performed at the gas station-turned-beer joint.

Eddie Wilson took over Threadgill's in the early 1980s and transformed it into a Southern restaurant.

In 1996, Threadgill's World Headquarters opened on Riverside. While the original location's theme is Austin between the 1930s and 1960s, the World Headquarters focuses on the city during the 1970s.
