Seats are snatched up quickly at Sunset Bar & Grill in Cedar Park on football game days, General Manager Johnna Sawyer said. The neighborhood bar shows NFL and college games as well as local high school games every weekend, Sawyer said.
The bar opens early on game days, and Sunset offers seven TV screens inside the bar as well as a large projection screen on the partly covered outdoor patio, she said. Sunset Bar & Grill also holds a themed potluck every Sunday during games. Sawyer said themes include appetizers, desserts and Cajun cuisine. Employees and guests can bring dishes, and the spread is free to customers.
She said the crew at Sunset hosts the weekly potluck to create a family- and neighborhood-friendly atmosphere.
“The potluck is great,” said Cedar Park resident J.T. Moyer, who said he often visits Sunset for Saturday and Sunday games.
“It’s just a great place to hang out,” he said. “And it is family-friendly. I take my kids—9 and 11 years old—there all the time.”
Owners Young and Jay Hui opened Sunset in February 2012, Sawyer said. The owners, who hail from Korea, cook and offer Korean cuisine on the menu, which is a popular choice with customers, Sawyer said.
Moyer said the fried rice, which is mixed with fresh vegetables and customers’ choice of chicken, beef, or pork ($7.99); shrimp ($8.99); or a combination of meats ($9.99), is his favorite menu item.
Besides Korean barbecue, fried rice, egg rolls and spicy lettuce wraps, the menu contains American and bar fare, including hamburgers, sandwiches, steak, seafood and stuffed jalapenos.
Sunset Bar & Grill also hosts regular fundraisers to benefit children in need and women’s shelters, Sawyer said.
“Every year we put out a 5-gallon water bottle, and people put money in throughout the year. At the time when school starts we go and purchase backpacks, school supplies—everything that kids need,” she said.
Sawyer said the welcoming atmosphere is what she loves about her job, where she has worked as general manager for one year. She said Sunset attracts customers from all walks of life—everybody is welcome.
“It is a very unique place,” she said.
