Baylor Scott & White Medical Center-Lakeway will end labor and delivery services June 28, with three OB-GYNs leaving the facility and patients being transferred to other area hospitals.
The 106-bed, full-service hospital currently delivers about 33 babies per month, a statement from the medical center said. BSW acquired the facility in 2016 from Lakeway Regional Medical Center, according to the facility's website.
What's happening
The closure marks a reversal from 2020, when BSW consolidated labor and delivery services from its Marble Falls location to Lakeway to provide "enhanced quality care by shifting our focus to a single nurturing location," Community Impact reported at the time.
The medical center—which had had six labor and delivery rooms and 18 postpartum beds—is currently evaluating how to repurpose and "transition the space to support other areas of care," Christy Millweard, a spokesperson with BSW said.
The change is driven by demographic shifts in the Lakeway area, where the most significant population growth is occurring among adults age 65 and older, according to the statement.
"Baylor Scott & White Health is deeply committed to the Lakeway community and providing access to high-quality care," the statement said. “Following a careful review of community health needs and anticipated changes to obstetric care in the area, we will be transitioning labor and delivery services to other providers that serve the area."
The breakdown
Patients currently in prenatal care at the Lakeway facility can transfer to another BSW location, follow their physician if relocating elsewhere, or choose another hospital in the area.
BSW will continue offering obstetric services at its Round Rock—which includes a Level III neonatal intensive care unit—and Marble Falls medical centers, Millweard said. Within approximately 20 miles of Lakeway, other hospital systems offering labor and delivery services include St. David's HealthCare and Ascension Seton.
The Lakeway campus will continue providing gynecology care, including well-woman visits and other women's health services.
