Eanes ISD adopts policy updates for opioid overdose reversal, excused absences and more

The Eanes ISD board of trustees adopted 13 local policy updates during the regular board meeting Jan. 23.

What’s happening?

Following the adoption of several public education bills during the 88th Texas Legislature, the Texas Association of School Boards initiated Update 122, which includes hundreds of local policy recommendations for school districts.

The Eanes ISD trustees first discussed several of these recommendations during its Jan. 9 meeting, as previously reported by Community Impact.

A closer look

Some of the adopted local policy updates include:

• Authorizing trained school personnel to administer opioid-reversing medication if a student is believed to be experiencing an opioid-related overdose
• Upholding the district’s requirements for the community volunteer program, which permits eligible, qualified and trained individuals—including chaplains and faith-based leaders—to serve as volunteers or mentors
• Providing regular video training opportunities for teachers of students with dyslexia
• Excusing absences for up to two days during a student’s junior and senior year of high school so they can visit a professional workplace
• Provide accelerated educational services to students identified as at risk of dropping out, or who are not performing at grade level or satisfactorily on a state-mandated assessments
• Establishing procedures for students to report concerning behavior exhibited by another student
• Developing a cybersecurity plan to secure the district’s cyber infrastructure against cyberattacks
