Houston City Council District E officials to host redistricting town hall meetings

Houston Mayor Pro Tem Dave Martin is hosting a pair of town hall meetings to provide residents in District E with more information about the city’s redistricting plans.

One of 11 districts within Houston, District E encompasses the Kingwood area and a portion of Clear Lake City.

According to a March 31 news release, the town hall meetings will be held at 6 p.m. April 11 at Space Center Houston—1601 NASA Parkway, Houston—and 6 p.m. April 19 at the Kingwood Community Center—4102 Rustic Woods Drive, Houston.

City officials noted the redistricting process will aim to maintain relatively equal population numbers between districts, preserve incumbent-constituency relations, retain integrity of neighborhoods or communities of interest, and ensure the districts are easily identifiable by geographic boundaries.

Additionally, the redistricting process will aim to establish compact and contiguous districts that are composed of whole county voting precincts.

City officials are encouraging members of the public to submit redistricting recommendations. Residents can identify certain voting precincts, neighborhoods and locations to be included in a specific district. After gathering community input, the city will host two public hearings regarding the city’s proposed redistricting plans July 13 and July 20 and will vote on a finalized map Sept. 14. If approved, the redrawn district map will go into effect Jan. 1, 2024.
