New Caney ISD trustees approve larger budget, lower tax rate for FY 2022-23

New Caney ISD’s board of trustees approved a budget for fiscal year 2022-23 that is almost $20 million more than the previous fiscal year’s budget, according to district budget documents.

The FY 2022-23 budget was approved by trustees on Aug. 15 and includes $225.9 million in total expenditures, according to NCISD budget documents. Meanwhile, the FY 2021-22 budget allotted $206.4 million for total expenditures, representing a 9.4% increase from FY 2021-22 to FY 2022-23.

NCISD’s general fund expenditures increased by 6.1% from FY 2021-22 to FY 2022-23, with funds rising from about $166.8 million in FY 2021-22 to about $177 million in FY 2022-23. This section of the district's budget covers expenses for instruction; curriculum and staff development; student transportation; health services; and extracurricular activities, according to NCISD’s budget documents.

From FY 2021-22 to FY 2022-23, NCISD’s child nutrition fund and debt service fund also increased by 12.3% and 27.1%, respectively. These sections of the budget cover student lunches and the school district’s bond debt, respectively.

While NCISD’s overall FY 2022-23 budget increased, the district’s total tax rate decreased. During the Aug. 15 meeting, NCISD trustees approved a total tax rate of $1.443 per $100 valuation for FY 2022-23. This is an almost $0.02 decrease from FY 2021-22, which had a total tax rate of $1.4603.

For FY 2022-23, NCISD’s maintenance and operations tax rate is $0.943, while the interest and sinking tax rate is $0.5.
