Sugar Land residents can expect traffic delays with multiple road closures relating to construction projects at Hwy. 90A and Hwy. 59.

What residents need to know

1. Hwy. 90 at the Grand Parkway closures

According to a city of Sugar Land Facebook post, daily lane closures began July 30 and will continue Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. until Sept. 30, including:
  • One alternate lane of the Grand Parkway’s northbound and southbound frontage roads from Sand Hill Drive to FM 1464
  • One alternate main lane of Hwy. 90A eastbound and westbound from Cunningham Creek Boulevard to Gateway Boulevard

The closure is due to the Texas Department of Transportation’s $46.49 million project to reconstruct Hwy. 90A between Cunningham Creek Boulevard and Gateway Boulevard, Community Impact reported. The project began in September and is expected to wrap up by Feb. 17, 2026, according to the post.

2. Hwy. 59 closures

The southbound lanes of Hwy. 59 from University Boulevard to the Grand Parkway will be closed from Aug. 2 at 9 p.m. to Aug. 5 at 5 a.m., according to a TxDOT news release. Commuters should use exit 106 and re-enter Hwy. 59 prior to the Grand Parkway.

The $53 million TxDOT project aims to extend Hwy. 59 and its frontage roads by approximately 1,000 feet north. The project will also remove a damaged turnaround lane and address Brazos River erosion with an estimated completion in late 2027.
