Sugar Land City Council approved a $3.2 million construction contract with Environmental Allies, LLC for the widening of University Boulevard at a May 7 meeting.

According to a May 8 news release, the University Boulevard project will add an additional northbound and southbound lane from New Territory Boulevard to just south of Lexington Boulevard, taking the corridor from four to six lanes. It’ll also include the additions of:

The project is jointly funded by city and Fort Bend County bonds, including:
  • $1.7 million from Sugar Land’s November 2019 general obligation bond
  • $1.6 million from the county’s 2013, 2017 and 2020 mobility bonds
The city’s $90.76 million general obligation bond, or GO bond, was approved by voters in November 2019 with focuses including drainage, facilities, mobility and safety.


Why it matters

According to the release, University Boulevard is a vital north-south regional corridor accommodating mobility across the area for residents. It connects to:"This University Boulevard corridor has seen tremendous growth in traffic during the past 15 years," City Engineer Jessie Li said in the release. "Our residents have been clear on the continued need to invest in mobility projects. We've worked hard to deliver on our promise from the 2019 GO bond election."

Also on the agenda

City Council also approved a $107,625 contract with Alliance Transportation Group, LLC for traffic signal, signage and pavement marking design services for the University Boulevard widening project at various intersections, including:
  • Lexington Boulevard
  • Hwy. 59
  • Telfair and Wescott avenues
  • New Territory Boulevard
This contract is separate from the widening construction with design anticipated to be completed in three months, according to agenda documents.


Looking ahead

Construction is expected to begin on the project in June and should be completed by spring of 2025, according to the release.
