Sugar Land City Council heard an update on the Sugar Land Space Cowboys, one of the city's oldest public-private partnerships, from Assistant General Manager Chris Parsons at a March 5 meeting.

Major takeaways

The Sugar Land Space Cowboys ended the 2023 season with a record of 61-89. The Space Cowboys are the Triple-A affiliate for the Houston Astros.

“The 2023 Sugar Land Space Cowboys season had many ups and downs on the field, which baseball season does. Many high-end Astros prospects called Sugar Land home for most of the season,” Parsons said. “While the results didn’t show up in the win column as much as we would have liked, the Sugar Land Space Cowboys roster was absolutely chalked full of young baseball talent, a few of whom are likely to be on the Houston Astros major league roster for years to come.”

The team saw Astros players José Urquidy, Michael Brantley, José Altuve and Yordan Álvarez suit up as a part of the rehab program during the 2023 season, Parsons said.

In 2023, the Space Cowboys suited up for a few games as the Dulces de Sugar Land because the team joined Minor League Baseball’s Copa de la Diversion program, which is a season-long event series designed to embrace the culture and values that resonate with local Hispanic communities, Parsons said. Not only does it honor the Hispanic community, but it also increased the Hispanic attendance by 5% from 2022 to 2023, he said.

“Our Dulces brand speaks about the Latino communities' contribution [to] the foundation and growth of Sugar Land,” Parsons said. “Centered just blocks from where Constellation Field sits today, baseball became an important facet of culture life, provided a sense of community and family entertainment—these are traditions we look to continue every day. The Dulces de Sugar Land brand is intended to honor the past, present and future contributions to our community.”

What to expect

This year, Constellation Field has already featured more National Collegiate Athletics Association baseball than ever before, and more is coming this spring, Parsons said.
