During the April 8 board of trustees meeting, Spring ISD Superintendent Lupita Hinojosa announced her plans to retire effective June 30.

What’s happening?

Hinojosa’s last official day with SISD will be June 1, and she will assist with the leadership transition for her remaining contract time, according to an April 9 press release from SISD. After her retirement, she said she plans to spend more time with her family and is excited for future opportunities.

“SISD is an amazing school district,” Hinojosa told Community Impact on April 10. “It feels like only yesterday that I started here, and I’m proud of all the amazing work we have done as a district.”

In January 2022, Hinojosa first stepped into her role, becoming the first woman to serve as superintendent in SISD's history, as previously reported by Community Impact. Hinojosa replaced former Superintendent Rodney Watson, who resigned effective January 2022.

What trustees are saying

“It's obvious—your love for students, your love for the community, your love for the district,” board Assistant Secretary Rhonda Newhouse said April 8. “It has been shown millions of ways throughout the district. We all love you. We all will continue to support you, and we wish you the best in your next endeavor. Thank you for your service.”

Career history

As previously reported by Community Impact, prior to becoming superintendent, Hinojosa:

  • Began working for SISD in 2014 as the district's chief academic officer
  • Became a teacher for Houston ISD in the late 1980s
  • Worked in the fashion industry prior to her education career
Hinojosa has a doctorate of education and a master’s degree from the University of Houston.
