On Dec. 6, the Spring ISD board of trustees considered the district’s calendar for the upcoming school year and swore in three trustees who were re-elected to the board Nov. 8.

SISD leaders proposed two calendar options for the upcoming 2023-24 school year. Option A places the first day of school for students Aug. 10 and the last day of school for students May 31, 2024. Option B would push the first day of school to Aug. 15 but move the last day of school forward to May 30, 2024. Option A would give students a week off from Oct. 9-13, while Option B only designates a holiday for Oct. 9.

Option B would also designate Nov. 7 as a holiday, while Option A only deems that day a teacher prep day when students would not attend school.

By comparison, the district’s 2022-23 school year calendar has later start and end dates than the two calendars proposed for the 2023-24 school year. The calendar lists the student start date as Aug. 16 and the end date as June 1. Like Option B, the calendar had one holiday slated in October on Oct. 10.

The SISD community has until Jan. 4 to vote on the new calendar, and trustees will consider the two calendars for approval at their Jan. 5 meeting.

Board election

Also during the Dec. 6 meeting, board President Justine Durant, board Secretary Kelly P. Hodges and Trustee Deborah Jensen were sworn in as trustees. Durant, Hodges and Jensen—of positions 3, 2 and 1, respectively—won re-election for their positions after being uncontested in November’s election.

After the three trustees were sworn in, the school board held votes to reassign the board positions, and no changes were made. With unanimous votes, Durant and Hodges were selected to continue to serve as president and secretary, respectively.

Board Vice President Winford Adams Jr. and board Assistant Secretary Rhonda Newhouse were also chosen to remain in their roles following unanimous votes.

Trustees will meet for the final time in 2022 at 7 p.m. Dec. 13. The meeting will be held at the Gordon M. Anderson Leadership Center, 16717 Ella Blvd., Houston.
