Friendswood ISD is planning to start the demolition at the site of the roof collapse from June. It’s scheduled to be wrapped up in early 2024, officials said.

Meanwhile, officials made progress on a few other projects throughout Thanksgiving break.

What you need to know

Starting the week of Nov. 27, equipment staging will be taking place at the site of the gym roof collapse at Friendswood High School, which killed a construction worker and injured three others in June.

Demolition of the site is expected to begin Dec. 4 and will be completed by Jan. 8, Chief Communications Officer Dayna Owen said. Access to this area will be restricted during this time. Previously, the district said the demolition would take place during Thanksgiving break.

What else?

During Thanksgiving break, district officials made progress on a few different projects, Owen said. At Westwood Elementary, workers replaced the school’s switchgear, which is responsible for providing electrical services to the campus.

Bales Elementary and FHS also saw air conditioning work take place, Owen said.

In addition to the demolition work taking place throughout the district’s Christmas break, additional heating, ventilation and air conditioning are also planned for Bales and FHS, Owen said.

Windsong Elementary will also be receiving a new roof in the upcoming spring, Owen said. At FHS, work on the new gym and performance arts center are ongoing too. The performing arts center will wrap up in the spring, while the first ever event for the new gym is scheduled just after the holiday break.
