As Superintendent Carol Nelson retires at the end of the 2025-26 school year, Alvin ISD has employed the Texas Association of School Boards Executive Search services to assist with the search for a new superintendent, according to a Feb. 20 news release from the district.

As part of the district’s superintendent search, AISD’s board of trustees has requested school staff and the public to provide input in developing a profile of the leadership qualities that would be desired of the new superintendent.
The questionnaire allows community members to provide feedback on the perceptions of AISD currently, strength and areas for improvement.
The questionnaire also allows members to rank the importance of professional experience and educational attainment, as well as characteristics and traits they would like to see out of the new superintendent.

How we got here
The board of trustees was informed of Nelson’s retirement at its Jan. 26 special meeting and began developing a timeline to identify candidates for the next superintendent. The board approved Nelson’s retirement at its Feb. 10 meeting, as previously reported by Community Impact.
Nelson began her career with the district in 1989 as a classroom teacher and later served as a librarian, assistant principal, principal, director and associate superintendent, according to the district’s website.
In 2019, she was appointed superintendent, becoming the first woman to hold the position in the district’s history, as previously reported by Community Impact.
“Serving Alvin ISD has been one of the greatest honors of my career,” Nelson said in the release. “I am incredibly proud of our students, staff and the strong relationships we have built with our community. Alvin ISD is a special place because of the shared commitment to excellence demonstrated every day across our campuses and departments.”
