Alvin ISD Superintendent Carol Nelson to retire at end of 2025-26 school year

Alvin ISD’s Superintendent Carol Nelson is stepping down at the end of the 2025-26 school year, concluding more than 30 years with the district, following board approval at its Feb. 10 meeting.

The board of trustees was informed of Nelson’s retirement at its Jan. 26 special meeting and began developing a timeline to identify candidates for the next superintendent, according to a Feb. 10 news release from the district.

Career history

Nelson began her career with the district in 1989 as a classroom teacher and later served as a librarian, assistant principal, principal, director and associate superintendent, according to the district’s website.

In 2019, she was appointed superintendent, becoming the first woman to hold the position in the district’s history, as previously reported by Community Impact.

During her tenure, the district has grown by approximately 3,500 to 4,000 students, reaching nearly 30,000 students by the 2024-25 school year, according to the release.

She also led the district through the COVID-19 pandemic, multiple campus openings and renovations, a voter-approved 2024 bond and the tornado that severely damaged Walt Disney Elementary School in 2024.

AISD earned several recognitions, including designation as a District of Distinction for Fine Arts and a “B” accountability rating from the Texas Education Agency for the 2024-25 school year, according to the release.

Going forward

Nelson will remain in the role through the end of the 2025-26 school year.

The district has not released additional information regarding the superintendent search process at this time.
