It doesn't have to be Halloween for Spring residents to let their imaginations run wild at Danny's Trix & Kix. Whether they grew up idolizing superheroes, have an obsession with a film or television show or just want to don a dinosaur suit, customers have fulfilled their fantasies year-round at Danny's for nearly four decades.

"When you come in, we fit you all the way around," owner Danny Gurganus said.

The shop has operated in the Spring area for 38 years, selling gag gifts, magic items and other novelties. However, Danny's made a name for itself for its wide variety, year-round customer service and the quality of its costumes, Gurganus said.

In addition to the wide array of masks, wigs, accessories and makeup, he estimates that the store and its warehouse house more than 100,000 costumes. Gurganus said staff members work with customers on designs and can help piece together distinctive costumes.

"Unlike a temporary store—their staff is just trained to sell you a product—when you walk in [this store] with an idea, we're going to work with you to help you achieve that idea," he said.

Danny's also provides costumes for theatrical performances, parades, renaissance fairs, conventions and for cosplay enthusiasts, Gurganus said. In addition to working with local school districts in the Greater Houston area, including Spring and Klein ISDs, the shop ships costumes to school districts as far away as Dallas, Oklahoma and Missouri.

Gurganus said the store also receives business from local theaters, including the Crighton, Owens, Christian Youth Theater, Playhouse 1960 and local dance studios. In addition, churches order costumes for religious productions.

The next two months will be the busiest for the store, Gurganus said, as customers prepare for Halloween and the Texas Renaissance Festival in October. While there is a noticeable uptick in business in September and October, Gurganus said his shop sees steady business year-round.

"Around Christmas, if you need an Uncle Sam [costume], no problem," he said. "On Fourth of July, [if] you need a Santa [Claus costume], no problem."

Gurganus said his passion for costumes stems from a background in entertainment. A Houston-area native, his mother, brother and sister all worked in the dance industry, and Gurganus himself has a background working in dance and magic.

"When my brother and sister would go to California or New York to study dance, there was always very famous magic shops there, so while they were dancing, I was down at the magic shops," Gurganus said.

While creating live shows for Disney in the '70s, Gurganus said he came up with an idea to open a costume, joke and magic shop to provide something for his recently retired father to do. The first shop opened in 1976 east of I-45 along Spring Cypress Road. Gurganus said he moved the shop to the FM 2920 location in 1993.

Danny's has been expanded three times at its existing location and has seen steady growth since its inception. Having run the business for more than 30 years with his wife, Darlene, Gurganus said he feels confident about the business' future, attributing the store's success to his customers.

"There's a saying I always tell the customers and that is, 'When you look good, I look good, because hopefully you'll tell people where you got it,'" Gurganus said.
