Katy Mayor Don Elder Jr. would like to leave City Hall. Not the office he holds, but the building at 910 Avenue C the city has called home for the last 27 years.

"[The current facility] served its purpose, but we're growing," Elder said.

He said the city plans to demolish the old social services building at 905 Avenue C and build a new City Hall. The current building has been added on and patched up so much that it has outlived its usefulness, Elder said. He said the city needs to hire more staff, but lacks a place to put them.

At its Aug. 27 meeting, the city council voted to spend $19,900 to demolish the old social services building as the department recently moved into a new facility. Demolition is expected to begin right after the Katy Rice Harvest Festival on Oct. 13–14.

Elder said there is no timetable yet for construction and a budget has not been set for the proposed facility.

Elder said he would also like to see the city build a new conference and convention center. He said there is a growing need for such a facility despite the Leonard E. Merrell Center opening its doors in 2005.
