3. Lake Houston Family YMCA




This local YMCA serves the Lake Houston community through programs and social services designed to help individuals and families learn, grow and thrive. All volunteers are required to complete YOTS training—which covers child abuse and COVID-19 protocols—prior to volunteering.

4. Jesse H. Jones Park and Nature Center Conservation Connections

5. Mercer Botanic Gardens

Mercer Botanic Gardens has a variety of both indoor and outdoor opportunities, most of which are available to volunteers age 16 and older. Attending orientation is recommended but not required for volunteers and will be held once a month, usually the third week of the month. The annual March Mart Plant Sale will be held March 23-25. HELP ANIMALS

6. Texas Litter Control

The organization provides low-cost spay and neuter services for animals, but this volunteer opportunity involves caring for cats at the PetSmart adoption center. Volunteers are needed to help with adoptions on Saturdays from 10:30 a.m.-5 p.m. and on Sundays from noon-5 p.m. Volunteers are also needed Mondays-Thursdays to help take care of cats in the adoption center. Volunteers ages 16-18 must volunteer with a parent or guardian, and all volunteers must volunteer at least once shift per month. For more information, contact [email protected].

7. Family Promise of Lake Houston


Family Promise of Lake Houston serves low-income families that become homeless due to an unfortunate circumstance, such as fires, floods, the death of a spouse, the loss of a job, eviction or foreclosure. The nonprofit provides daily support and education programs that lead each family to permanent self-sufficiency. Volunteers under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

8. FamilyTime Crisis and Counseling Center

FamilyTime Crisis & Counseling Center offers volunteer opportunities at its Thrift Shop in Porter and its office in Humble as well as at special events. Volunteer orientations are held quarterly.

9. Humble Area Assistance Ministries

Humble Area Assistance Ministries is an interfaith organization that helps community residents in crisis by providing essential resources to help them move toward self-sufficiency. Volunteers under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Orientation for volunteers is held Thursdays at 11 a.m.

10. Friends of the Library Kingwood


The nonprofit organization supports the Kingwood Branch Library by operating a bookstore in the library as well as an off-site online center from which books are listed, sold and shipped. Proceeds from donated books and other media support the Kingwood Branch Library, and volunteers are needed to run both the bookstore and the online center.
