Harris County Emergency Services District No. 48 has transitioned to a direct service model in the southeast Katy area. The district was previously served by a contract with the West I-10 Volunteer Fire Department.

The West I-10 VFD filed an injunction with the 215th Harris County District Court to stop the transition when it was announced earlier this year. The court ruled Aug. 14 to block the injunction, but a trial is still scheduled for May 31.

HCESD No. 48 became the direct provider of emergency medical services to the district Aug. 17.

Under the new service model, full-time county employees provide EMS services. The upcoming trial will decide whether this new model violates a contract with West I-10 VFD to provide services.
