A new position in Fort Bend County will focus on county legislative priorities at the state and federal levels.

The overview

At an Oct. 8 meeting, Fort Bend County commissioners approved creating the director of government relations position, who will serve as a liaison for the county’s state and federal legislative interests and priorities.

According to the job posting, the individual will work with elected county officials and departments and will report to Commissioners Court. Specific responsibilities include:
  • Analyzing and drafting proposed legislation
  • Testifying before legislative committees
  • Coordinating with county representatives at the state and local levels
  • Coordinating with fellow counties and government entities
  • Providing regular reports to Commissioners Court
The ideal candidate should have a bachelor’s degree in public or business administration with seven years of experience working at the local, state or federal level, according to the job posting. Additionally, the candidate should have a background in public finance and budgeting, supervision and contract management.

The cost


According to the job posting, the salary range is commensurate with experience, although agenda documents show the county budgeted $235,280 for the position with $150,000 for salary.

The other $85,280 is slated to cover taxes, insurance, equipment, and travel and training costs, according to agenda documents.

The application period for the position opened in early October, and the county hopes to fill the position as soon as possible, Director of Human Resources Nicole Ledet said in an email.
