Unofficial final results from Katy ISD show incumbents secured their seats in the race for board of trustees positions 6 and 7.

In a nutshell

Position 6 incumbent Rebecca Fox beat challenger Donovan Campbell with 56.51% of votes versus his 43.49%. Meanwhile, Position 7 incumbent Dawn Champagne garnered 56.23% of votes versus challenger David Olson's 43.77%.

Digging deeper

Fox has been a trustee for 18 years, serving three times as board president, according to her Community Impact questionnaire. She said one of the biggest challenges facing the district is retaining teachers, and she said the district should work to "improve their workload and show them the respect they deserve." Fox did not return Community Impact's call as of press time.

Champagne has served six years on the KISD board, and she said she has volunteered for KISD for 20 years, according to her questionnaire. She said she ran for re-election because she wanted to continue advocating for students, parents and teachers.

What they're saying

In a May 6 interview, Champagne said she relied on grassroots efforts to individually garnering support and secure her re-election since she didn’t have the budget for large advertising campaigns.

“Wherever I came upon people who would say that they were supporting me, ... I would ask them to please contact 20 people [about my campaign],” she said. “I guess through that and the Facebook postings that I did, Rebecca [Fox] and I were able to muster up enough support to pull out a win.”

Additionally, moving into her next term, Champagne said her focus will be on securing more funding from the state to support public education.

“I want to keep the attention on public education and the importance of making sure we get increased funding from the state, which we can’t do until 2025, but we can definitely start planning for what we’re going to do in 2025,” she said.
