What’s happening
An upcoming event on July 22 aims to provide students with a firsthand glimpse into the health care profession through interactive simulations and practical experiences.
Throughout the day, the students will rotate through various simulation stations, engaging in a range of health care procedures including suturing, starting an IV, administering CPR and even performing laparoscopic surgery.
One major highlight of the event is a simulated demonstration of the hospital's cutting-edge surgical robot.
How it happened
Dr. Majid Basit, the medical director of cardiology and gastroenterology for Memorial Hermann Medical Group at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land, initiated the program following his teenage daughter's growing interest in health care. Basit emphasized the significance of exposing students to the field of health care early on, as it often sparks their interest and encourages them to pursue it as a career.
"Hands-On Health Care is really a great opportunity to connect with the teens in our community as they start to think about their future," Basit said.
The collaborative effort between Memorial Hermann, Fort Bend Independent School District and Lamar Consolidated Independent School District has been pivotal in bringing this interactive experience to students, according to a news release.
About the program
The event will be led by more than 20 health care professionals from Memorial Hermann Sugar Land, representing various specialties such as cardiology, surgery, sports medicine, obstetrics and pathology.
Nurses, hospital staff and volunteers from Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital will also play integral roles in supporting the event, providing guidance and assistance to the participating students.
