To ring in 2023, several art galleries will host their first art exhibitions of the year. From life-like sculptures to geometric works, here are upcoming art showings in the Heights, River Oaks and Montrose areas:

Redbud Gallery

"Sculpting Endless Forms" by Brandon Ballengée

Jan. 7-Feb. 26

Per artist Brandon Ballengée's statement, the title—"Sculpting Endless Forms"—draws influence from the work of Charles Darwin. Darwin noted life on earth adapts to "endless forms" as a result of constant change; the series of work, largely animal-like shapes, is the artist's response. The exhibit will be on view at Redbud's East and West Gallery, and the opening reception will be from 6-9 p.m. Jan. 7.

Laura Rathe Fine Art

"Year of the Rabbit" by Hunt Slonem

Jan. 13-Feb. 11


Year of the Rabbit, a solo exhibition by artist Hunt Slonem, will be featured at the Laura Rathe Fine Art Gallery ahead of the Chinese New Year on Jan. 22. In addition to being born during the year of the rabbit, Slonem has focused his art on the animal in the past, and this exhibit marks a return to it with examinations of the artist's youth, according to the gallery's website. The opening will be from 5-8 p.m. Jan 13.

Anya Tish Gallery

"MIDNIGHT ZONE(S)" by Adela Andea

Returning to Anya Tish Gallery for her sixth solo exhibition, "MIDNIGHT ZONE(S)", Houston-based artist Adela Andea's latest body of work will be a showcase of sea-like creatures one might find in the ocean's midnight zone, like in the work of novelist Jules Verne, according to a press release from the gallery. The work—made with foam, plexiglass, and LED and neon lighting—will be on view beginning with a reception from 6-8 p.m. Jan. 13.

"The Light Within" by Jay Shinn

Jan. 14-Feb. 25

Like much of artist Jay Shinn's body of work, this exhibit will feature bright and geometric works of art, making use of light and negative space. The opening for the work will be on Jan. 14 from 1-5 p.m. with an artist talk at 4 p.m.

Mara Held & Julia Kunin

Jan. 28-March 19

This exhibition will feature works by artists Mara Held and Julia Kunin. Their styles, while in different media, both make use of organic shapes. The reception will be held on Feb. 11 from 2-4 p.m., when both artists are in town.

Archway Gallery

"Shaped by Discovery" by Tracey Meyer

A new series of artwork by artist Tracey Meyer, Shaped by Discovery consists of abstract shapes meant to remind readers of "what we can learn when we take a closer look," according to a press release. The opening will be Feb. 4 from 5-8 p.m. with an artist talk at 6:30 p.m. The gallery is offering complimentary valet parking and light refreshments for the event.
