Lance Corder said he opened The Draft along with his brother Bryan and business partner Huy Huynh in 2015 because Kingwood needed another sports bar.
The livable forest has limited options to watch sporting events, Corder said.
“Kingwood needed it,” he said.
The Draft’s menu includes traditional bar food, such as burgers, chicken wings and nachos, but it also features Korean barbecue ribs, meatloaf and Vietnamese egg rolls.
The sports bar also carries its own specialties, such as the Trench Dog, which is a corn dog split down the middle and filled with chili and
cheese sauce.
Corder said he believes what separates food from The Draft from its competition is all of its food is fresh and made by hand.
“[Huy Huynh] worked at Papadeaux [Seafood Kitchen] for 15 years so he had a lot of experience working for a bigger chain that made everything by hand,” Corder said. “That was part of our [focus]—making sure we made everything by hand.”
The restaurant has 29 beers on tap, with a focus on local and state beers. The Draft always carries products from Kingwood business Back Pew Brewing.
He said he tries to make sure half of the beers on tap are from Texas and that many of those are brewed in Harris County.
The trio of owners also recently expanded their footprint in Kingwood, purchasing local restaurant Zachary’s Cajun Café in August.
Corder said they plan to keep the menu at Zachary’s the same, only adding liquor sales when the permitting process is completed.
Zachary’s will allow The Draft’s ownership group to do more community service without the stigma of being owners of a bar, he said.
“We just acquired Zachary’s Cajun at the beginning of the month,” Corder. “We’ll start using that outlet to get involved in the community.”
