U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt, R-Houston, announced Oct. 6 that he will be running to represent Texas in the U.S. Senate, joining the March 2026 Republican primary election.

Hunt was the first person elected to represent U.S. Congressional District 38 in 2022.

The details

Hunt is running for the U.S. Senate seat currently occupied by U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Austin, who was first elected in 2002.

Hunt announced his candidacy with videos of his family and friends across multiple social media platforms.

Hunt will face Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in the March primary election. The filing deadline for candidates is Dec. 8.

“I’m running for the United States Senate because the Washington establishment has no right to choose who represents Texas. That decision belongs to Texans, and Texans alone,” Hunt said in a Facebook post.

Something to know

Hunt is currently serving his second term as U.S. Rep. for District 38. His current term ends in January 2027.

The 38th congressional district represents parts of Cypress, Tomball, Jersey Village and Houston, according to the congressional map.

Next steps

Hunt will appear on the GOP primary ballot scheduled for March 3, 2026.
