Harris County voters are turning out in huge numbers to the polls this year, breaking records and exceeding initial projections from election officials.
A total of 977,279 Harris County residents voted during the early voting period from Oct. 24 through Nov. 4, compared to 766,526 early voters during the last presidential election in 2012.
Of the early ballots cast, 882,580 of them were made in person and 94,699 residents voted by mail.
A total of 1,204,167 Harris County residents voted in the 2012 election, including Election Day votes. A total of 1,188,731 residents voted in the 2008 election.
Harris County Clerk Stan Stanart was predicting a significant uptick in voter turnout heading into early voting this year, suggesting that as many as 1.4 million total ballots would be cast this November. Voters have already exceeded his prediction of 800,000 in-person early votes cast.
The following polling locations received the most early votes:
- Metropolitan Multi-Service Center, Houston: 39,686 ballots cast
- Juergen’s Hall Community Center, Cypress: 37,473 ballots cast
- Trini Mendenhall Community Center, Houston: 36,121 ballots cast
- Champion Forest Baptist Church, Houston: 32,875 ballots cast
- Freeman Branch Library, Houston: 27,307 ballots cast
The number of registered voters in Harris County also increased to roughly 2.22 million this year, up from 1.94 million in 2012. Statewide, more than 15 million Texas residents registered to vote this election, according to the Texas Secretary of State’s office, a record figure and a 5 percent increase from the primaries earlier this year.
