Cy-Fair residents can expect to see a few new faces on the board following this election as just one incumbent—Hinaman, who has served on the board since 2019—is seeking re-election. Trustees Tom Jackson, Gilbert Sarabia and Debbie Blackshear did not seek re-election.
The other three sitting trustees—Natalie Blasingame, Scott Henry and Lucas Scanlon—were elected in 2021, and their seats will be up for re-election in 2025. These trustees ran on conservative platforms and unseated longtime incumbents two years ago.
Despite Texas school boards being nonpartisan, elections have become more political in recent years. Most races prior to 2021 were uncontested and nonpartisan, based on previous reporting by Community Impact.
This year, LeCompte, Edwards, Ray and Kalmbach ran a similar campaign and were endorsed by the Harris County Republican Party and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, among other Republican elected officials and conservative organizations.
Jaeggi, Hinaman, Martone and Ramirez Romero also ran together as “All4CFISD.” This group accepted endorsements from several CFISD school namesakes and former district leaders as well as public education advocacy organizations.
Why it matters
School board trustees have multiple duties in the oversight of school districts, and they share a complementary role with the superintendent.
Board members can pass policy by a majority vote but are not involved in the day-to-day operations of the district. According to the Texas Association of School Boards, a trustee's role includes:
- Adopting goals and monitoring success
- Adopting policies and reviewing for effectiveness
- Hiring and evaluating the superintendent with input from the community
- Adopting a budget, setting a tax rate and relaying the financial needs of the district to state legislators
- Communicating and engaging with the community to build a consensus for district policymaking
