Jersey Village City Council members will consider the resignation of council member Michelle Martin at the June 15 regular meeting.
The overview
Following the acceptance of Martin’s resignation, City Council members will discuss and provide direction and a timeline to fill the vacancy. In accordance with City Charter, the vacancy will be filled through a vote of City Council and the appointee will serve until the next general election. Place 3 is up for election May 1, 2027, per the Jersey Village website.
Martin was first elected into Place 3 in 2021, and was reelected the following two election cycles, according to election records. Her resignation is due to a relocation outside of Jersey Village, Martin said in her resignation letter.
“Serving the residents of Jersey Village has been one of the most rewarding and meaningful experiences of my life,” Martin said in her letter. “I am incredibly proud of the work we accomplished together and deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve this community.”
In other news
City Council will also consider modifying the over-65 homestead exemption from $113,000 to $120,000, following council member Simon Hughes’ request at the May 30 governance meeting to add the item to the June 15 agenda. According to a Jersey Village staff report, the city has increased the exemption three times in the past seven years.
With this increase, the city would lose $57,195 in annual revenue, per a staff report, and with an aging population, this revenue reduction is projected to increase in following years. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick announced a proposal for the 2027 legislative session that would lower the qualifying age for senior property tax benefits to 55.

- Amend hotel code classifications to reflect hotel size
- Agreement for services related to a capital improvement project
- Agreement for two trailer-mounted diesel emergency generator sets
- Amend the budget in the 2024 General Obligations Bonds Capital Projects Fund
