League City next week will attempt to set a mark recognized by Guinness World Records for the most people to participate simultaneously in a stop, drop and roll.

On Oct. 12, hundreds of League City residents will gather in Clear Creek ISD's Challenger Columbia Stadium during halftime of Clear Springs and Clear Brook high schools' homecoming game to attempt to break the record of 1,719 people. Guinness World Records officials will officiate and announce if League City sets a new record.

The effort will begin after the game at 8:15 p.m. on the field. Participants of all ages are welcome, and the first 3,000 will receive a shirt. Participants will receive free admission after halftime begins.

Sarah Greer Osborne, League City's director of communications and media relations, said it's the city's second attempt to break the record. The League City Fire Department hopes the event will bring attention to Fire Prevention Week, which runs Oct. 7-13.

"We tried to do this last year," Osborne said. "It's really the brain child of our fire marshal, Tommy Cones, and he wants to bring awareness to fire week."

The city needs volunteers to serve as judges and other roles. Volunteer opportunities are available here.
