The Houston Food Bank needs volunteers as it is now distributing approximately 1 million pounds of food daily, up from 400,000 per day before COVID-19, the organization announced June 1.

“Volunteers are essential to Houston Food Bank’s operations, and are needed now more than ever,” Houston Food Bank wrote in the announcement.

Those who feel comfortable volunteering can register online for one of these shifts: Monday through Saturday 1-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. with new shifts added frequently, according to the announcement.

Volunteering opportunities can be had at 535 Portwall St., Houston, for packing, sorting, and inspecting product. At 8530 Market St., Houston, packing, sorting, and inspecting product for distribution opportunities are available. Finally, at neighborhood super site distributions, volunteers are needed to distribute food in the Klein area on Fridays and the NRG Parking Lot on Saturdays. Some Sundays and off-site options are available as well.

The food bank is practicing social distancing and increased safety measures; temperatures are taken on all individuals entering the building or project areas; there is enhanced sanitation throughout the facilities; and masks are required.
