The details
The expansion features six new gates, D1-D6, that can accommodate wide-body airplanes and be converted to accommodate 10 narrow-body airplanes, according to the release.
The new Terminal D-West Pier will also include:
- An additional 160,000 square feet to Terminal D
- A 10,000-square-foot architectural ceiling
- A 380-foot-long LED wall covering 11,000 square feet of wall space
- Eight new art commissions by Houston-based artists
The expansion will include space for 16 concessions that are set to include restaurants and duty-free concept businesses.
Some of the businesses that will be open in the new terminal Oct. 22 include:
- Popeye’s
- Einstein Bros. Bagels
- Jamba Juice
- Lego store

"We are focused on improving the overall passenger experience at the airport—from parking and traffic to providing modern terminals with the right amenities. This project is a major investment in our city's future," Houston Mayor John Whitmire said via news release.
The background
Construction on the project began in November 2019 with the demolition of the former IAH Terminal C-North, according to the release.
The expansion is part of the $1.46 billion IAH Terminal Redevelopment program, according to Houston Airports’ website, which is the largest development program Houston has invested in since the opening of the airport in 1969.
