Organizations will be holding events in the Bay Area to raise awareness about human trafficking in the coming weeks.

In 2020, Texas ranked second in the nation for reported human trafficking cases, according to a Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership news release.

“Spreading knowledge and awareness is a critical factor in the fight against this heinous crime,” the release reads. “Our goal is to educate as many people as possible on this crime happening all around us and put a stop to it!”

The first event will be from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Johnnie Arolfo Civic Center, 400 W. Walker St., League City. The event is being hosted by Mady’s Movement, an organization founded by Nicole Bowie, a League City parent who lost her daughter to human trafficking.

The event will include speakers who have not yet been revealed to provide a conference and training related to human trafficking. The event aims to help residents learn how to prevent this crime.

More information about the event can be found here.

A similar, larger event will be held at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 4 at the Lonestar Flight Museum, 11551 Aerospace Ave., Houston. This event will include the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership, chambers of commerce, businesses, law enforcement, churches, governing bodies, advocates and survivors to discuss the effects of human trafficking and resources available to combat it.

The event will include a news conference from 10:30-11 a.m. with local leaders, the Department of Homeland Security and others who will address prevention, protection and partnership.

From 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Kerri Taylor, Unbound Now Houston executive director, will moderate a panel discussion with various officials, including Bowie and a human trafficking survivor.
