HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake has earned the highest distinction for cardiovascular thoracic surgery, according to a November news release from the hospital.

HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake is a full-service hospital that offers inpatient and outpatient medical, surgical and specialty services in the Bay Area, according to the release.

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons is a nonprofit organization that represents over 7,600 surgeons, researchers and health care professionals worldwide, who prioritize surgeries for the heart, lung and esophagus, according to the release.

The STS star rating system is “one of the most sophisticated and highly regarded overall measures of quality in health care,” the release reads. The star rating system is measured through specific procedures performed by an STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database participant.


According to the release, a three-star rating was awarded to HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake due to patient care and outcomes in isolated coronary artery bypass grafting procedures, also known as a heart bypass surgery.

The three-star rating also places HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake among the elite for heart bypass surgery in the U.S. and Canada, in addition to Houston.

HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake also earned an “A” from the Leapfrog Group Hospital Safety Grade, a program that measures hospital injuries, accidents and errors through a simple letter grade system, in spring 2023 and fall 2022, according to the release.
