Amid a winter storm warning set to begin 6 p.m. Jan. 20 for the Greater Houston area—with heavy snow, sleet and ice accumulation possible—city and county officials in the region are opening warming shelters for residents in need.

American Red Cross Texas Gulf Coast

According to the Harris County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, the Red Cross will open warming shelters from 5 p.m. Jan. 19 through midday Jan. 23 at Tom Bass Community Center and Kingwood First Baptist Church. Food, water, cots and blankets will be provided and no pets are allowed.

Brazoria County

The county announced via Facebook the opening of several warming shelters starting Jan. 19.


City of Baytown

The city of Baytown announced via Facebook that a warming shelter will be opened at Memorial Baptist Church starting at 8 a.m. Jan. 20 through the morning of Jan. 21.

City of Houston

During a Jan. 17 press conference, Houston Mayor John Whitmire announced 10 warming shelters will be open starting 6 p.m. Jan. 19 through midday Jan. 23, according to prior reporting.


City of Montgomery

According to a Facebook post by the Montgomery Police Department, Montgomery City Hall will open as a warming shelter starting at noon Jan. 20 through noon Jan. 22.

Fort Bend County

Fort Bend County announced a warming shelter will be open at Attack Poverty-Friends of North Rosenberg from 8 a.m.- 8 p.m.


Harris County Precinct 1

According to the Harris County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, warming shelters will be open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Jan. 20-21 at the Finnigan Community Center, Lincoln Park Community Center and Tom Bass Community Center.

Harris County Precinct 2

Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia announced via Facebook that all Precinct 2 community centers will be open Jan. 20-Jan. 23 from 8 a.m.-6 p.m.


Harris County Precinct 3

According to the Harris County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, warming shelters will be open from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Jan. 21-24 and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Jan. 25 at the Crosby Community Center, George H.W. Bush Community Center, Juergen’s Hall Community Center, San Jacinto Community Center and the Trini Mendenhall Community Center.

Harris County Precinct 4

Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones announced three warming centers will be open Jan. 20-22 from 8 a.m.-8 p.m.

Over Under Fellowship

Over Under Fellowship announced Jan. 18 it will open as a warming shelter until the cold has passed.
