What we know
Walsh is the former CEO and Executive Director of the Harris County Sports and Convention Corporation, a component of Harris County that aids and acts on behalf of the county to manage, operate, maintain and develop NRG Park.
According to a Nov. 15 news release, Walsh will step into the role of CEO at the Sports Authority effective immediately. Interim CEO Chris Canetti will step down to continue serving as president of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Houston Host Committee.
Walsh's selection also comes on the heels of the approval of new HCHSA Chairman Juan Garcia. Garcia was confirmed as the new chair Nov. 6 following the departure of former Chair J. Kent Friedman in October.
In their own words
Walsh and Garcia both said they are excited about their new roles and the future of the Sports Authority.
“I’m excited and humbled by this incredible opportunity to lead the HCHSA,” Walsh said in a news release. “As I get started in this new role, I look forward to fostering community engagement, working with our partners at the city, county and our professional sports teams, and finding ways to increase the HCHSA’s oversight and contributions to the development and maintenance of our world-class sports facilities."
Garcia said under Walsh's leadership, HCHSA will continue to collaborate with key stakeholders and the community.
“We are lucky to have Ryan lead HCHSA as we enter a very important time for sports in our region,” Garcia said. “Ryan’s experience and his track record of success at NRG Park line up with the mission of the HCHSA as we continue to ensure our venues are maintained at the highest level in the increasingly competitive sports entertainment world.”
