A Harris County building in Downtown Houston will be named in memory of U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, who died July 19.

The setup

Harris County commissioners approved not only a joint resolution honoring the life and legacy of Lee on Aug. 6 but also approved of naming the Harris County facility in Lee's memory. The county building houses the Harris County Public Health and Harris County Engineering departments.

What they're saying

Commissioners each expressed their sentiments on Lee's passing.

Precinct 1 Commissioner Rodney Ellis spoke about his conversation with Lee's daughter, who also works for Harris County, according to Ellis.

"If I'm lucky enough to see her mother on the other side, I can't wait to tell her what an outstanding job her family and her staff members did, and all the wonderful things that happened," Ellis said.

"I'm grateful for having occupied a little bit of the same space as she did," Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia said.

"May she rest in peace and power. She inspired and motivated me. Talk about a champion of justice," Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones said.

"If you do anything in Harris County and you don't run into Sheila Jackson Lee, you hadn't been doing much. She's everywhere," Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey said.
