The city of Seabrook is trying to sort out the future of its Pelican Bay Pool facility, and as part of that effort, is entering into an agreement with Progressive Commercial Aquatics to conduct an assessment on the facility.

What you need to know

Over the past several decades, officials at the city have maintained Pelican Bay Pool, which officials called a “cherished asset,” according to a Feb. 14 news release from the city.

However, the facility is now in need of updates to comply with updated safety regulations, as well as to fix several issues that were found while doing previous renovations of the site.

The facility will be closed for the 2024 season, according to the city's website.

How we got here

Due to changes in health and safety codes in 2023, the city has since begun looking at how to bring the facility back into compliance, according to the release. Initially, it was projected it would cost about $500,000 to do so.

However, as work went on, more concerns were brought up, such as the demolition of the slide, which revealed more unexpected safety issues, according to the release. These problems prompted the city to reassess the upgrades.

Quote of note

"Most of what you see at the pool today is what has been in place for the past 40 to 50 years, other than the smaller splash pad," Seabrook Director of Public Works Kevin Padgett said in the release. "We are dedicated to working closely with council and stakeholders to determine the best course of action for our city."
