Zooming in
Per the release, ForeverWell programming is offered year-round for seniors, and includes:
- Fitness and wellness activities, such as yoga, Zumba, Pilates, water aerobics, weight training and pickleball
- Clubs and hobbies, such as gardening groups, book clubs, mahjong and volunteer projects
- Educational classes, including classes focused on technology and other skills
- Annual events, such as Be a Kid Again at YMCA Camp Cullen, which will be held Sept. 29-Oct. 1
The impact
According to the AARP Foundation, more than 40% of adults age 45 and older report experiencing loneliness, which YMCA officials noted highlights the importance of nurturing meaningful social connections and community engagement as people age.
"Many are entering a new phase of life, and doing so alongside a community while participating in activities that encourage movement, relationship building and exploring new interests keeps adults of all ages active and engaged," said Stephen Ives, president and CEO of YMCA of Greater Houston, in a statement. "Through our ForeverWell program, specifically for adults 55 and better, we create opportunities for connection and engagement."
Something to note
To make YMCA programs more accessible, officials noted the YMCA of Greater Houston accepts SilverSneakers, Renew Active and Silver&Fit fitness programs through participating Medicare plans.
